CSRXP LAUNCHES CAMPAIGN ENCOURAGING POLICYMAKERS TO KEEP THEIR PROMISE TO LOWER RX PRICES

Campaign Will Highlight Impact of Out-of-Control Drug Prices, Especially in Areas like Oncology, and the Urgency to Hold Big Pharma Accountable

Washington, D.C. – The Campaign for Sustainable Rx Pricing (CSRxP) launched a campaign Tuesday encouraging policymakers to act on campaign promises to hold Big Pharma accountable and lower prescription drug prices.

“Out-of-control prescription drug prices were a top issue for voters in the last election and policymakers made clear commitments on the campaign trail to hold Big Pharma accountable and lower prices,” said CSRxP executive director Lauren Aronson. “Policymakers must deliver on campaign promises to lower drug prices by swiftly advancing bipartisan market-based solutions to crack down on Big Pharma’s price-gouging and anti-competitive tactics.”

“While Americans battled a pandemic and provided drug companies billions of taxpayer dollars for vaccines, Big Pharma continued to hike drug prices at egregious rates and engage in anti-competitive behavior to keep prices high,” Aronson continued. “The time is now to cut through Big Pharma’s bogus rhetoric, hold the industry accountable and deliver relief for American patients facing financial hardship due to out-of-control prescription drug prices.”

The campaign will highlight, in particular, the impact of out-of-control drug prices on American cancer patients who face financial hardship while Big Pharma continues to hike prices at rates far exceeding inflation.

A poll commissioned by CSRxP and conducted by Morning Consult earlier this year found:

  • 87 Percent: An 87 percent majority of American voters say it is important policymakers deliver on 2020 campaign promises to lower prescription drug prices and hold Big Pharma accountable.
  • >50 Percent: More than half, 54 percent, of voters say they would be less likely to support their representative in Congress in the next election if Congress fails to pass into law any major legislation this year to lower the price of prescription drugs. This includes key voting demographics like independent women and independent men, who say they would be 44 and 53 percent less likely to support their representative in the next election if drug pricing solutions fail to advance.
  • 85 Percent: 85 percent of voters agree President Biden should make lowering drug prices a top priority.
